      Windows Viewer Cannot Open Color or Grayscale TIFF Images Exported from Kofax Capture


      PROBLEM


      Attempts to view color and grayscale TIFF images that were exported from Kofax Capture in the Windows Photo Viewer result in the following error message:


      Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because the file appears to be damaged, corrupted, or is too large.

      SOLUTION


      By default, Kofax Capture exports color and grayscale TIFF images using the form of JPEG compression described in the original TIFF 6.0 specification. JPEG compression in TIFF images was updated in Tech Note 2, which is a later addition to the TIFF 6.0 specification.


      The Windows Photo Viewer only supports color and grayscale TIFF images that use the Tech Note 2 JPEG compression. Fortunately, Kofax Capture can be configured to create color and grayscale TIFF images that use the Tech Note 2 JPEG Compression.


      To configure Capture to create color and grayscale TIFF images using Tech Note 2 JPEG compression:

      On each Kofax Capture Workstation

      1. If VRS 5.x is installed with Kofax Capture, open the VRS Administration Console and select the Scanner Configuration tab. If VRS 4.x is installed with Kofax Capture, open the Scanner Configuration Utility.
      2. From the scan source list, select the scan source that is marked as the default scan source. (Example: Canon DR-G1100)
      3. From the configured sources list, select the default source (Example: Canon DR-G1100 with SVRS with AIPE) and click Properties.
      4. Under TIFF JPEG Style, select Technical Note 2 and click OK.
      5. Repeat for every configured source in the list.
      6. Click OK to return to the scan source list.
      7. From the scan source list, select File Import and click Configure Sources.
      8. From the configured sources list, select Software Import and click Properties.
      9. Under TIFF JPEG Style, select Technical Note 2 and click OK.
      10. From the configured sources list, select Kofax Ascent Capture Release Source and click Properties.
      11. Under TIFF JPEG Style, select Technical Note 2 and click OK.
        1. Restart all Kofax Capture modules and services that use ImageControls.

      On each Kofax Capture server

      1. If VRS 5.x is installed with Kofax Capture, open the VRS Administration Console and select the Scanner Configuration tab. If VRS 4.x is installed with Kofax Capture, open the Scanner Configuration Utility.
      2. From the scan source list, select File Import and click Configure Sources.
      3. From the configured sources list, select Software Import and click Properties.
      4. Under TIFF JPEG Style, select Technical Note 2 and click OK.
      5. From the configured sources list, select Kofax Ascent Capture Release Source and click Properties.
      6. Under TIFF JPEG Style, select Technical Note 2 and click OK.
        1. Restart all Kofax Capture modules and services that use ImageControls.
